Right-hander Michael King has declined the player option on his contract with the San Diego Padres to become a free agent, MLB.com reported Thursday. King had two seasons remaining on a three-year, $75 million contract that included player options for each of those years.

His choice for the upcoming season was to remain with San Diego at a salary of $28 million or opt out of the deal entirely, accept a $5 million buyout, and enter the open market. His option for the 2028 campaign was valued at $30 million.

San Diego has been incredible for him and that he hopes to continue his career with the club.

During his time with the team, King compiled a 30-22 record with a 3.15 ERA across 78 total appearances and 77 starts. He originally joined the organization from the New York Yankees as part of a major December 2023 trade package that sent star outfielder Juan Soto to New York.

In the recent postseason, King delivered key performances on the mound for the club. He finished with a 1-0 record and a 0.64 ERA across three appearances, which included two starts during the playoffs. He gave up just one hit over seven innings to defeat the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild-card series.

Against the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series, King allowed one run and three hits over five innings in Game 2. He returned two days later to record a 40-pitch, two-inning save that helped the Padres secure a victory over Milwaukee in Game 3.

King said to reporters that San Diego has been incredible for him and that he hopes to continue his career with the club. The right-hander will now evaluate offers from across the league as front office executives prepare for the winter market.

The San Diego front office will need to compete with other franchises vying for starting pitching depth this offseason. Team officials have until the winter meetings to finalize their roster strategy.
